Books: FRBR: A Guide for the Perplexed by Robert Maxwell (ISBN 9780838909508) and Understanding FRBR: What It Is and How It Will Affect Our Retrieval Tools edited by Arlene Taylor (ISBN 9781591585091) (read my chapter FRBR and the History of Cataloging).
I don’t know German and so can’t read Konrad Umlauf’s Informationsaufbereitung: Vorlesungsskript (which an online translator says means “Information Preparation: Lecture Script”), but it mentions FRBR in section 1.5, Anforderungen an bibliografische Aufnahmen. If you read German, please leave a note explaining it to the rest of us.

well I read and speak german but my english is hardly sufficient to accurately translate all those technical terms. Maybe it helps if I tell you that Konrad Umlauf teaches at the Humboldt University Berlin, department “Library and Information Sciences”. He’s a well known expert for the LIS’ in germany.
Section 1.5 of the lecture script could be translated to “Requirements for the bibliographic record”. It introduces with
“Unter bibliografischer Aufnahme wird hier eine strukturierte Beschreibung eines Informationsobjekts verstanden. Der Terminus ist weiter gefasst als der Terminus Titelaufnahme, denn auch inhaltsbeschreibende Angaben gehören dazu. Die FRBR Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records leiten die Anforderungen an bibliografische Aufnahmen aus Nutzerinteressen ab. Hierzu werden zunächst Entitäten der Informationsobjekte unterschieden:”
which could be translated to
“Bibliographic recording (bibliografische Aufnahme) means the methodically (structured) description of an information object. The term bibliographic record is conceptualized broader than the term title record (Titelaufnahme), because it also covers tasks of describing the content. The FRBR Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records derives the requirements for the bibliographic record from the users points of interest. The first step is to distinguish the entities of the information object:”
After this he describes and explains those entities and the concept of the FRBR (to the students ;)).

Comment by Tobi — 17 November 2006 @ 11:39 amIt’s a primary course in information maintenance, and the part on FRBR is all very familiar, with some fresh German examples. I didn’t think it was worth a full translation, here are some snippets to give you an idea.
From the introduction:
“This site is under construction. The essay gives an overview on information products that are useful for information treatment, and on methods of information treatment. Covered are: indexing methods, metadata and FRBR, ISBD and bibliographic control, controlled terms and free terms; Metatexts (like abstracts and reviews); form and function of library catalogs; classification; subject analysis and thesauri.”
An from the chapter requested:
“1.5 Requirements for bibliographic records
With the phrase “bibliographic record” is understood here, a structured description of an information object. The phrase goes beyond “title record”, because authority records are also meant. The FRBR base the requirements on user interests. To do this, the following entities of information objects are differentiated…”
As a Dutch native, the German concepts are easier to understand than to find an English equivalent, but I hope this answered (in part) the questions you may have had.
